Join Me in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
On January 31, 2018, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The following weeks and months were a blur of doctor's appointments, tests, surgeries, and recoveries. I've had three rounds of chemotherapy, 7 weeks of radiation and I recently started chemotherapy again all while teaching medical classes at our high school.
Initially, I wasn't going to share this information with anyone except my family and close friends. My husband, Ron, encouraged me to "own it" and use it as a teaching tool in my medical classes. He told me that if my students were going into medicine, then they needed to see the good, the bad and the ugly parts of cancer. They certainly have seen it all as there have been some rough days. Even on those days, there have been teachable moments. I believe that knowledge is power and I'm learning as much from my students as they are from me during this process. I've told my students repeatedly that with the increase in technology, and the reasearch that is being done, maybe one of them will be the one to find the cure for cancer!
Since "owning" it, a friend of mine encouraged me to apply for the Runway for the Cure. I never thought I'd be selected to participate in such a meaningful event. To my surprise, I was selected and I can't wait for the event! Participating gives me an opportunity to feel like I've accomplished something through this process, that I am giving back for those who have given to me and that through fundraising I might be able to be part of the cure so no one else has to go through this ever again.
I want thank my husband, children (Kaitlin and Ryan), my whole family, church family, friends, co-workers and students for their support and prayers during this time. No one fights alone, and I've needed you all at different times and for different reasons. I hope I have made you proud!
Thank you for supporting me in Runway as I participate in support of ending cancer forever!
